Hide the desk to the tray and keep ringing, open it at login, or switch to Do not disturb when you step away.
Hide to tray, keep ringing
Closing the desk window doesn't quit the app — it hides to the system tray (menu bar on Mac) and stays registered. An incoming call still rings: a small incoming-call window comes up in the corner of your screen with Answer and Decline, without opening the desk or taking your keyboard (see When the desk isn't in front). The app also asks for your attention in the Dock or taskbar. A ringing call shows no desktop notification: the incoming-call window is the alert, and a notification would cover its buttons.
Click the tray icon (or the Dock icon on Mac), choose Open Smileline Desk in the tray menu, or open the app again to bring the window back — a minimised window comes back too. On Mac, you can also choose Window → Open Smileline Desk or press Cmd+Shift+0, including after closing the main window.
Open at login
Smileline Desk can open by itself when you log in to your computer, so it rings after a restart without anyone opening it.
- The first time you open the app, it asks: Open Smileline Desk when you log in, so you never miss a call? Choose Yes to turn it on, or No to leave it off. It asks only once.
- Change your mind at any time: right-click the tray icon (the menu bar icon on Mac) and choose Open at login. A tick means it is on.
- When it opens at login, the app starts quietly — no window, just the tray icon (the menu bar icon on Mac) — signed in and ready to ring. Calls ring in the small incoming-call window; click the icon to open the desk.
Your computer has the final say. If its settings block Smileline Desk from opening at login, ticking Open at login takes you to those settings so you can allow it. The tick always shows your computer's own setting, so if a change doesn't take, the tick goes back. On macOS 13, calls ring most reliably with the window open, so open it after you log in.
Quit
To quit completely, choose Quit in the tray menu — on Mac, Cmd+Q and Quit in the Dock icon's menu do the same. The app checks first: If you quit, this computer won't ring for calls. Quit anyway? Choose Quit to close it, or Keep running to stay reachable. Keep running is the default, so pressing Enter (Return on Mac) never quits by accident, and neither does Escape.
Logging out, restarting or shutting down your computer closes the app without asking, and so do store updates.
Do not disturb
Available in the tray menu is your ringing switch. Untick it and this desk is skipped when calls ring the practice — they go to your colleagues' devices, or to voicemail if nobody else is available. Tick it again to rejoin the ring.
Do not disturb applies to this desk only. Your browser tab, if it is also enabled for calling, keeps its own setting.
