AI agents

Let Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another AI agent work in your practice, with sign-in handled for you.

An AI agent can look things up and make changes in Smileline for you — find a patient, add a task, move an enquiry on, read a report. You give the agent one address; it asks you to sign in to Smileline and approve access, and that is the whole setup. There is no key to create or copy.

Smileline speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP), so this works with Claude (web, desktop and mobile), Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code.

Connecting an AI agent sends practice data — including patient details — to the AI provider you chose, where it is processed under that provider's terms rather than Smileline's. Connect one only if your practice is content to take that responsibility.

Before you connect

  • Only owners and managers can approve a connection.
  • A connection belongs to one practice, fixed when you approve it. Connect again for each practice you run. A partner agency can instead connect one agent for every linked practice you belong to — see Agencies.
  • An agent acts as the person who approved it. It can read and change exactly what that person can, and every change it makes is recorded in the activity log under their name. Removing that person from the practice stops the agent.

Find your practice's address

Open Settings → Integrations → Apps. The AI agents section shows your practice's address — for example https://api-eu.smileline.io/mcp — with a Copy button. The address depends on the region your practice lives in, so always copy it from here.

Connect an agent

In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.

Paste your practice's address and choose Connect.

Sign in to Smileline in the window that opens, choose the practice, and approve.

In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps & Connectors, turn on developer mode and choose Create.

Paste your practice's address as the server URL.

Sign in to Smileline when asked, choose the practice, and approve.

Copy the command shown under AI agents and run it in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http smileline https://api-eu.smileline.io/mcp

Claude Code opens your browser to sign in and approve the first time you use it.

Choose Add to Cursor or Add to VS Code under AI agents. The editor opens and adds Smileline; approve access in the browser window it opens.

The approval screen

Smileline's approval screen names the practice and what the agent will be able to do. It also says where access is being sent — for example Access will be sent to claude.ai — and warns you when it goes to an app on this computer. Only continue if you started the connection yourself.

AI agents register themselves, so their name comes from the app, not from Smileline; the screen marks them Unverified app.

If the screen says This connection request expired, go back to your AI app and connect again. A registration nobody approves within a day is removed.

What an agent can do

An agent works through the same API the Zapier app uses, with the same access: patients, enquiries, appointments, tasks, conversations, campaigns, reports and practice settings, limited by the role of the person who approved it.

Some areas stay in Smileline and are not available to agents:

  • clinical records and the rest of the PMS workspace, and clinical referrals;
  • calls and call recordings;
  • Core Practice Transfer;
  • your own account, your practice list and the admin area.

Large files, such as a data export, are handed to the agent in parts. Claude Code limits how much of a reply it reads; if an agent reports a cut-off answer there, raise MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS.

Each connection can make up to 300 requests a minute. The agent refreshes its own access, so a connection keeps working until you disconnect it or it goes unused for 30 days.

Agencies

A partner agency connects an agent to the agency itself. One connection then works on the agency — its practices list and setting up new practices — and inside every practice currently linked to the agency that you are a member of, with your role in each. This includes existing practices linked later and practices moved from another agency. Linking a practice does not add you to its team. If the practice unlinks or moves to another agency, or your membership ends or is suspended, the agent loses access on its next call.

  • Open the partner dashboard to find the address under AI agents. When you approve, choose the agency rather than a practice.
  • Anyone at the agency who can create practices can approve a connection. Only the agency's owners can disconnect one, from Authorised connections on the partner dashboard.
  • An agent can create up to 100 practices a day. Each new practice needs its owner's email address, and the owner receives an invitation, just as in the New practice wizard.
  • For a practice the agency created, until the owner joins, an agent can email that invitation again, send it to a corrected address (the old link stops working) or withdraw it. One address receives at most three owner invitation emails for the same practice a day.
  • In the practices your agency creates you hold the Agency role, and so does the agent acting for you: a manager's access, except that the practice's owner accepts its agreements and manages its billing, and only its owners and managers run its Academy channel and buy its Academy courses. If your seat in the agency ends, the agency is declined or closes, or the practice unlinks or moves, that access is suspended and the agent's calls into the practice stop.
  • An agency connection cannot add enquiries or set up the webhook subscriptions apps such as Zapier create for themselves. The practice connects its own app for those.

Disconnect an agent

Every connected agent is listed under Authorised connections in Settings → Integrations → Apps. Choose Disconnect to cut it off; the agent is refused on its very next request. Anyone can disconnect their own agent; owners and managers can disconnect anyone's.
